So the new phone looks like the body is exactly the same. Would it be safe to assume that the iPhone 4 cases are compatible?

Yes nearly all the case manufactures have for iPhone 4/4s on their website.

If you look at the specs (dimensions), they are identical...the only difference being the weight of the phone, which wouldn't make a difference i would imagine (outside of maybe making some of the thin, cheap cases less effective as far as protection goes...but that difference would probably be negligible and not a real issue).
