I don't get the people who opt for expensive AT&T plans, buying a $199 phone and then paying well over $2000 in a two-year commitment to the carrier.
I'll stick with my plan: I'll buy a contract-free iPhone for around $700, then select a $20 carrier plan which includes enough minutes and unlimited data (I live in Europe). So in addition to long term savings I get no commitment, just pure fun

Is it difficult to find iPhones in carrier stores after launch? I've heard that a lot of carrier stores have a hard time keeping iPhones in stock.

I still have the old school second generation iphone, so I'm definitely going to be upgrading. Since the 4S is the most recent available, I really have no other options. Although....trying to decide between the 4 with 32gb and the 4S with 16gb. I'm moving over to Verizon and they're the same price...anyone have an opinion as to which would be better between the two?
If you're just coming over to Verizon the iPhone 4S seems like a good bet. Unless you really need more than 16gb. I've been fine with 16gb and still have room to spare. And since you're going to get locked into a contract anyways, might as well get the latest model.

No because I got another year and a half on my contract and I'm happy with the IP4. iOS 5 will make it feel like a new phone when it comes out. By time I'm ready for an upgrade, the IP5 should be out.

Hopefully they don't make larger screens because any bigger, the iPhone would be too big. Like a brick those other smartphones are.

In US, we don't have that choice. We are stuck with the carriers. We can pay full price, but we have to pick a carrier it will work on. We can't leave and take our phone from AT&T to Verizon. Also, It would be nice, but we don't have a $20/mo plan for min and unlimited data. I may be mistaken, but we don't have discounts for service if we buy a phone at full price.
So we may as well save money on the price of the phone.
I know a contract isn't for everybody, but it helps us to get a good phone cheaper.

Yes- techically it will be my wife's. Anout 6 months ago she switched from an iPhone 3GS on AT&T to Virgin Mobile with an Android phone. We saved some money with the amazing $25 a month plan but she has been really unhappy not only with the phone itself but Android OS but with Virgin Mobile. The voice quality has been really bad. We never had any issues with AT&T. She is very excited about returning to the iOS fold! And since I have an iPhone 4 we are looking forward to using iMessage and FaceTime.

Business wise I might go with the 4 and wait for the Ipad 3. Tired of doing business related activities on the 3gs and think the Ipad might be the best way to go.

The 4s is pretty nice, internally at least but idk if it's worth the update from a 4. I think the 5 or whatever it will be called will have the redesign, 4G LTE, and probably a larger screen. Thats what' I can't wait for!!

Good for you! Resist the temptation to buy a new smartphone after less than 1.5 yrs. I mean it. Who really needs to upgrade a $600 device every year? Let the 70 million folks out there with pre-iPhone 4 devices buy this iteration. Oh, and all those poor owners of early Android devices, too. Give 'em a chance to experience iOS.

BTW, I'm curious how many people will go for the AT&T $0 iPhone 3GS? Give that to kids with a $15/250MB data plan and load one of the unlimited SMS/text apps, maybe even Google Voice. Tell 'em you're gonna dock their allowance if they stream video or download stuff that pushes data above the limit. And tell them that they're not getting a new iPod for Christmas.

I am ALL ABOUT the new iPhone 4S. I personally think the iPhone 4 is still the best looking phone there is, so in reality I don't need a change. In fact I didn't love the renders I had seen with the tapered back. There is also a big change to the internals. Go use a 3G next to a 3GS. Are these the same phone? No! They look the same but the 3GS is superior in MANY ways. The same goes for the iPhone 4S.

Right. Maybe you don't need the extra speed, better camera and Siri. Your iPhone 4 with iOS 5 is going to be fantastic and feel like a new phone. Be happy.
