Contacts transfer from blackberry to iphone4

My husband recently switched from blackberry to iphone4. To transfer contacts from blackberry to iphone, added the msn account and tried using outlook but the names and phone numbers have changed and it was a complete mess. Can using gmail account be any better? Also how to export from contacts from any gmail account to iphone? I did the same thing in pad i.e. Transferring contacts from gmail to iPad it worked fine, just importing and exporting the contacts. Can't I use the same export contacts method here? Pls help as there are nearly 850 contacts.

I'd sync them up via Gmail. That worked between my Z10 and 5c.

As soon as I entered my Gmail into my 5c, the contacts were there.

Which Blackberry did your husband switch from? And where were the contacts initially based?

It's a blackberry curve 9320. Contacts were in the phone memory. Due to large number of contacts transferring to sim is not possible.
