I have my wife's old phone and want to sync it with my pc so i can update the o/s and do other stuff. There are voice messages on the phone from my mother in law whio passed last year we don't want to lose. How can we save these?

I use Phoneview, their is free demo version. I saves voicemails, text messages, call logs..
It works very well

Have you ever sync'd with your PC before? Because syncing with a new computer will delete all content. You'd be better off syncing to iCloud and updating OTA.
