Please help cydia wont open

hi i recently jailbroke my iphone 4 with absinthe and cydia doesnt open it will start but then close right away and same with safari and any app that was installed by cydia. thanks in advance.

Restore and jailbreak again. Something went wrong! And since you made a backup before you started the process, a quick restore wont harm anything...

also does it matter if i have a sim card in the phone?

The sim doesn't matter for the jailbreak part. Only for phone activation.
Are you trying to unlock it also? Or are you on an authorized carrier?
