I worked at a company that had a wellness program. Basically, they would allow each employee to expense exercise equipment, gym memberships, etc. up to a certain point. I believe it was something like $2,000 USD a year. The guy who sat next to me expensed his new bass fishing boat. His argument was that it was related to a sport. He was reimbursed by the company.

Canadian owned companies treat their employees so much better than US owned companies.

Craziest thing I've ever expensed...4 tropical fish for my boss's daughter's fish tank when 2 of her other fish died. I had to drive all the way from NYC to Philadelphia to get the fish and buy special equipment to transport them back to NYC. Total - $2,998 for the fish and $400 for the equipment! $3,398 all expensed!

I lost my iPhone 2G, yes I kept it THAT long!! And I needed a phone for work purposes; how else would they contact me?

Needless to say, it didn't go over well and I lost some privileges fora while, but I got a new phone and avoided any serious trouble.

$650,000 worth of Cisco carrier-grade optical gear.

My company was expanding into new buildings all over town and we needed high speed between all buildings. I did a 10Gig DWDM optical network design, presented it and was turned down. At the end of the year a VP comes to me and asks if I still have that design and parts list, which I did. Turns out they needed to get lots of cash off the books and wanted to make the spend but it the sale had to be complete within 2 weeks. Since going through channels would have taken too long I put the entire list on my American Express card and expensed it at the end of the month. I bought a 42" HDTV with the award points.

Footnote: Two months later some exec decided we should pull our own fiber after all making my purchase unnecessary. Before the year was out we traded it all in, still in unopened boxes, for $120,000 Cisco credit.

There have been a fair share of strip club "expenses" on the american express... but the winner for me was paying for escorts in Vegas for my CEO. Found the hefty charge on my card a month later, but couldn't recall running up a 4 figure tab at a "Diner". Corporate cards and Vegas are a bad mix.

Took a client out one time for lunch and somehow along the way we ended up in a Adults Only store where he proceeded to pick up a few "videos" and "toys", took them to the cash register and then gave me the look to indicate that I was paying for theme...ummm can you say awkward. lol Doing up my expense report was hilarious because I had to be quite creative with the descriptions.

The craziest thing I ever expensed was a pack of toilet paper. I was driving on a road trip and stopped at gas station in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania in an "emergency" situation. The gas station bathroom was out of TP and when I told the attendant, he blew me off saying that he couldn't leave the register to get a roll from the back. So, when faced with adversity in a dire situation, I did what any desperate person would do- I bought a pack from the store than took it into the bathroom with me. I then submitted it on my expense report when I got back and it was duly paid... once I was forced to tell the story a dozen times to giggling coworkers.

I used t work for one of the Cell phone companies here in the US as a Tech support manager for one of the call centers. And on one of the trips i had i was sent to a meeting in Mexico to talk about a contract closure. After the meeting and once the contract was signed I went out for drinks with few of the other colleagues that attended the meeting including my boss, who happens to be the site director, to celebrate the new contract. My boss decided it was fun to go wild in Mexico because it was far from home so he took us to a strip club, a bar, and then we went to the hotel and he had a "small party". The next day my boss told me to make sure i cover all the expenses in the report. It was so funny because the strip club was called "mis gatitas" which translates to " my kitties". I had to leave a detail report that we had to give a good donation to the "cats without a home foundation" to ensure the deal closure in Mexico. The receipt had the names of the girls that attended and said something like this:

    gatita martha - $250
    gatita rosa - $150

All in all it was fun but having t find out a way to cover it wasn't. lol

I was hired as the Asst. marketing director of a consulting firm. at the same time a new CFO was hired. about 4 months into my job i was processing online orders when i noticed some suspicious transactions. it turns out that from the day he started the CFO had been embezzling money from the company. He had taken about $110,000. Different things such as trips with his BF to Vegas (i think two or three), BUYING AN IPHONE 3G, and throwing a party with over $1,000 of alcohol alone. looking back on it i feel involved because he offered to give me the left over alcohol valued at about $400. I didnt think twice at the time because I was under 21 and free alcohol was free alcohol. The CEO called him to ask about the charges instead of waiting until he came into the office. He claimed he didnt know he couldnt use the company card for his own use... the next day we received a fedex with his company cell phone in it. overnight with the companies account number. We never saw or heard from him again. It turns out he was also taking checks from clients and fedexing them directly to his e-trade account. I think the iphone was the best purchase he made! I feel like i expensed the alcohol, right....?
