Text Message Preview Not Always Staying Up?

has anyone experienced with the text message preview window that when a text message comes into your phone and you read it but dont respond and dont unlock your phone and put your phone back down sometimes the preview will remain on your phone until you unlock it and other times it goes away and when you unlock the phone eventually you see a "1" in the message box? my question is why does it sometimes remain there and other times it disappears?
