I've been able to download apps over 3G, there was only one (that I don't remember) that I tried to download and it said I had to do it over Wifi/a computer because the size was too large

That's correct, most apps are small enough to be able to download over 3G. But large apps like Navigon or TomTom need to be downloaded over WiFi. I believe it's anything over 250MB.

I have had very few apps complain about 3g for downloading, I believe the above poster is correct (anything over 250mb). I haven't seen much go over that size besides a few games.

Yes. Every now and then, one will get a warning suggesting that the app is so big that one should prefer WiFi or even wired Internet via iTunes.

I can download most apps over 3G but when it comes time for an update it tells me to connect to wifi or itunes on the computer.

Actually, it's 20MB. I had an app at 22 and had to plug my phone in.

Not to mention the toll on your battery when downloading larger-sized files via 3G. Wifi is the best option, when available.
