In theory you shouldn't need to close apps at all, most go completely to sleep and they shut down totally if memory gets low........
This whole "should I close my apps or not" confusion/debate boils down to this:

    1. As posted above by Solubleapps: you shouldn't need to close apps at all . .....I agree with this

    2. As reported by numerous users (including myself): some apps continue to run - even when switched to background/closed to "multitask dock" and seems to be continuously running and not in suspended mode (usage and standby times are identical)

The problem is this: When "2" happens, there is no way to tell which app(s) is causing the issue of continuously running. When you double click your home button and see 20+ apps in that dock, how can you tell which app(s) is causing the issue? You cant. . . In this case, its best to just "close" all running apps.

Although, it's USUALLY not necessary to regularly "close" all background apps, I think it is a good practice to do so . . periodically when issues arise

can anyone confirm if it is "bad" to close them A LOT??

thanks to Activator i can remove background apps, reset safari and free memory with a couple taps and a swipe to the left..

it literally takes about 2 seconds

Many people have stepped forward to say that there is no need to manually close your apps - that iOS handles this very well for you. However, if I end up wanting to surf multiple tabs in Mobile Safari, if I do not manually close my background apps, the all my tabs constantly refresh. If I do clean out my background apps, I have a much nicer experience.

For me it is trying to break a bad habit. Having recently left the "Dark Side" of the Blackberry world, it was just a normal thing to close the apps. You had to with a Blackberry. It is a bad habit to break and is sort of an OCD thing too. Also if you are not on an unlimited plan like me, I am afraid I might go over the limit. I just close out the apps before going to bed now.

I usually close my apps out every couple of days. I can't say if I get better battery life, but I find that there is significantly less lag loading or switching between apps.

I use SBSettings to find out how much ram is being used, when it goes below 20 I quit apps that I'm not using. (iPhone 3GS)

I do the same, but for me it is much less obvious if I get better battery life or not. Maybe it depennds on the device and firmware...

The only one I actually close is Sirius. I find the battery drains faster if I don't close that one out.
Skype seems to do the same thing.

I agree.... There needs to be an app to close everything. Hit the app icon and it is done.

Is there a way to suggest/request such an app? (Assuming it hasn't already been requested).

I close all the apps out maybe once a week. I have not really noticed any noticeable slowdown or battery drain with leaving them running.

For AppStore? Probably impossible cause you cannot dig in other apps from your app.

For other stores with JB? Probably possible...

There are only a few that I don't close regularly (SMS, Echophon, Phone, Settings). All others get closed when I know that I'm "done" with them for that time.

I only close out of apps if my task switcher is too many pages to be practical

Though I close out of the obvious ones that run in the background, such as Slacker, anything using my current location, etc. Like many users who came from a BlackBerry, this took some getting used to! Though I DEFINITELY prefer the Apple task method.
