This thread is a beautiful microcosm of forum behavior. We have humor misinterpreted as serious, humor treated as serious, flames, indignation, a majority of posts that do not discuss the topic, spam, and yet it still presents useful info on the topic. I humbly request that this topic be stickied with its spam intact. :)

Nitsuj, I'm with you. You did nothing wrong. And like you, I was a JB noob and it was so simple. Bite and Mywi were my main reasons. Now I got the HTC Sense weather and a cool theme and I'm very happy :)

I'm finally convinced. Thanks!

No problem. Good luck. Just do your homework first, know what you're getting into, and ask questions of the experts in the jailbreak forum if you have questions. They're helpful. Once you're done, using Cydia takes some getting used to. It's "like" app store, but not the same. Again, take your time, do research and use google. You'll get it.

It has ran a rather odd course hasn't it. The advice to turn off the text preview, and to jailbreak was very good advice, both were a big help and ultimately turned out to be the solution. It's a shame the good advice almost got lost in the shuffle. The thread got focused on why I wanted to turn off the text preview and how I worded my original post. I'm glad it got back on track and could prove useful to someone.

It probably won't get stickied but I have rather enjoyed reading through it all.

nitsuj, I want to thank you for the post. I read it before I received my phone and it made me aware of the situation. I also appreciate your display of confidence when jailbreaking. I was trying to avoid jailbreaking my phone but believe I will now. I'm glad you didn't leave this forum. You will find there are fanboys located in all forums.

DoctorK you have been helpful in this thread also.

Darthgamer, you have been very helpful in several threads I have read through.

OMG! Let me visit these Spams before they are removed!!! (idiots really think anyone will follow this crap?)

If this doesn't make sense, it is because the spam posts have been removed. (Whyyyyyy?!?) ;)

I'm glad you found it helpful in some way. Don't fear the jailbreak, it really was easy. Not saying it's the answer for everyone, but it helped me.

As for the spam, what is it about this forum? I'm on lots of forums, and they all get the occasional spam bot sneaking past, but I've never seen it this bad.

Does anyone know where I can get some Cialis?

(That post is going to look real stupid when they take the spam out and it looks like I just asked that out of the blue.)

I don't find the SMS alerts a problem. If they don't show up, you would never know to check for new messages. Same as with the phone part. Why would you want to turn off the calling part of a phone? Just don't let yourself get in weird situations with it. lol

It's not about weird situations. It's about a goofy way to notify. Every other phone I've owned, including my Blackberry, my old Moto Droid, and all the dumb phones I've owned all had the same notification. You get a text, it makes a noise and theres a little icon showing that you have a text. Just like it is with bitesms. I get that not everyone thinks it's a problem, but judging from the responses here and the popularity of bitesms, it's obvious that at least some people have noticed the issue.

It really comes down to privacy I guess. It would be like my mail arriving opened. Or all my phone calls being on speaker phone. Just because I may not have private info coming in, doesn't mean I want my info out there. The principle of it I guess. Like if a cop asks if he can search my car. I'm going to say no, because it's my right to. Even if I have nothing to hide.

Does that make sense? I tried to say it without making any jokes or using sarcasm this time.

It sort of makes sense - but I mean, with your mail analogy... people can see who the mail came from where the return address is, ya know? I never open mail and go "Wow, I had no idea it was from US Bank!" I agree that it'd be better to just to a notification light like my droid did... but I don't think it's tragic if you turn the preview off. It'd pretty much be like what you said wtih the mail stuff - they'd know who your mail came from by looking at the envelope. The info is pretty much out there regardless, ya know? I hope this doesn't come off smart-ass... I'm not trying to be.

You don't come off as a smart ass. This is why I started this thread, to discuss this. I get your point, once you remove the text preview, the problem is pretty much solved. I guess I just like the option of being able to set it up how I want. I'm a control freak. ;-)

Obviously many people do, however - otherwise programs like BiteSMS wouldn't exist. Nor would this thread, either.

If they don't show up, you would never know to check for new messages.

Then why does the little red numerical icon show up on the SMS box to indicate how many you have?

Frankly, that's all I want or need from my phone - the obtrusive, front-and-center "ACKNOWLEDGE ME NOW!!" mid-screen notification is unnecessary and bothersome.

When I receive email, I get a notification on my iPhone. The email is not automatically opened and displayed on my phone. If it did, I would have to close it to get to my home screen. What nitsuj is saying, why can't SMS come in the same manner. Leave out privacy concerns, leave out awkward situations, leave out the naughty girlfriend photos (forward those to me). The simple question is, why is just a simple notification not an option like you get with email? Would anyone find it convenient to have their email open and on their phone display as soon as it arrives instead of opening the email manually? Well, it might be convenient but I prefer to open it manually at a time when it may be more convenient to read it. I believe this is a very valid concern and feel this may be addressed by Apple if brought to their attention.

Well as I have heard can't you toggle what is shown on your home screen via text? I thought I read somewhere that you can have it to show just the senders name not the message. I may be wrong but I thought I read it around TiPb somewhere.
