Jailbreak your phone and use iBlacklist or Popup Blocker to block SMS notifications.

biteSMS has an option to "Show nothing" when a message is received in Lockscreen or Unlocked mode. very nice, as i despise the annoying popups as well

go here for more features biteSMS has to offer: biteSMS - Great Extra Features

it baffles my mind as to why it is so difficult for some people to accept the FACT that the current iPhone notification system sucks

I've installed bitesms and it's working great. Funny how popular bitesms is considering how minor of a problem the stock notification is. ;-)

While all you guys say that these scenerios are far fetched how about this one...

You with your girlfriend and and ex girlfriend or female friend sends you a text that pops right up?

Little more realistic? Yes it is

How about this- Your GF sends you a dirty text and it pops up while someone else has the phone?

Trust me, that can happen as well

I agree with the OP. Thats is one of the things that I do not like about the phone

Nitsuj...I'm assuming since you have bitesms your phone is jailbroken. Were you a beginner before you did this or did you have experience? Honestly this text thing bugs me enough to jailbreak the phone but other than an iPod this is my first apple product so I don't want to kill it by jailbreaking it. I know it's reversible but I don't know anyone personally who has done it so if something goes wrong I'm on my own. Was it easy? Did you have problems? Even downloading and installing bitesms?

And yes, I've read the forums and seen the instructions. It's the random problems people have that are holding me back.

You can turn off the part where the contents of the sms message pop up without jailbreaking. It'll still show you received a text, but it won't show what it says. Go settings --> Messages --> Show Preview (turn it off!)

    Voila.

It still shows who sent it. I don't need people seeing who is texting me! Blackberry was nice and simple..a little buzz, a blinking LED, and a little star next to the text icon.

Yes, I was a beginner. Honestly, I don't know what the big deal is with jailbreaking. Not to insult anyone, but I just don't get the threads where people have problems or think they've bricked their phones. It literally took my 3 minutes to jailbreak it. I read up on it a bit and watched a few videos. But even if I hadn't, the greenpoison software walks you right through it. Hold this button for x seconds, both buttons together for x seconds and so on. It even has a little countdown timer on the screen as you do it. They leave nothing to chance. And this isn't coming from a tech guy. I'm not a programmer, or software engineer or IT guy. I'm just a regular blue collar gear head.

Maybe I was lucky, but I just don't see any way it could be easier to jailbreak. It was way harder to root a Droid or Nook Color. Downloading bitesms was easy as well. Cydia is sort of like the Appstore, a little more primitive UI perhaps. Go to Cydia, search for bitesms and click it.

I'm no expert, but I see no way you can hurt the device as long as you go in to it with a clue what to expect. Go to youtube and search for "tysiphonehelp" he does a tutorial video, which is the one I followed.

It may not be the answer for everyone, but for me, it was worth it to jailbreak. Bitesms, a cool theme and having live weather on my lockscreen have fixed a few things about the iPhone that had me missing the Droid a bit.

This thread is a beautiful microcosm of forum behavior. We have humor misinterpreted as serious, humor treated as serious, flames, indignation, a majority of posts that do not discuss the topic, spam, and yet it still presents useful info on the topic. I humbly request that this topic be stickied with its spam intact.

No problem. Good luck. Just do your homework first, know what you're getting into, and ask questions of the experts in the jailbreak forum if you have questions. They're helpful. Once you're done, using Cydia takes some getting used to. It's "like" app store, but not the same. Again, take your time, do research and use google. You'll get it.

It has ran a rather odd course hasn't it. The advice to turn off the text preview, and to jailbreak was very good advice, both were a big help and ultimately turned out to be the solution. It's a shame the good advice almost got lost in the shuffle. The thread got focused on why I wanted to turn off the text preview and how I worded my original post. I'm glad it got back on track and could prove useful to someone.

It probably won't get stickied but I have rather enjoyed reading through it all.

nitsuj, I want to thank you for the post. I read it before I received my phone and it made me aware of the situation. I also appreciate your display of confidence when jailbreaking. I was trying to avoid jailbreaking my phone but believe I will now. I'm glad you didn't leave this forum. You will find there are fanboys located in all forums.

DoctorK you have been helpful in this thread also.

Darthgamer, you have been very helpful in several threads I have read through.

I'm glad you found it helpful in some way. Don't fear the jailbreak, it really was easy. Not saying it's the answer for everyone, but it helped me.

As for the spam, what is it about this forum? I'm on lots of forums, and they all get the occasional spam bot sneaking past, but I've never seen it this bad.

I don't find the SMS alerts a problem. If they don't show up, you would never know to check for new messages. Same as with the phone part. Why would you want to turn off the calling part of a phone? Just don't let yourself get in weird situations with it. lol

It's not about weird situations. It's about a goofy way to notify. Every other phone I've owned, including my Blackberry, my old Moto Droid, and all the dumb phones I've owned all had the same notification. You get a text, it makes a noise and theres a little icon showing that you have a text. Just like it is with bitesms. I get that not everyone thinks it's a problem, but judging from the responses here and the popularity of bitesms, it's obvious that at least some people have noticed the issue.

It really comes down to privacy I guess. It would be like my mail arriving opened. Or all my phone calls being on speaker phone. Just because I may not have private info coming in, doesn't mean I want my info out there. The principle of it I guess. Like if a cop asks if he can search my car. I'm going to say no, because it's my right to. Even if I have nothing to hide.

Does that make sense? I tried to say it without making any jokes or using sarcasm this time.

It sort of makes sense - but I mean, with your mail analogy... people can see who the mail came from where the return address is, ya know? I never open mail and go "Wow, I had no idea it was from US Bank!" I agree that it'd be better to just to a notification light like my droid did... but I don't think it's tragic if you turn the preview off. It'd pretty much be like what you said wtih the mail stuff - they'd know who your mail came from by looking at the envelope. The info is pretty much out there regardless, ya know? I hope this doesn't come off smart-***... I'm not trying to be.

You don't come off as a smart ***. This is why I started this thread, to discuss this. I get your point, once you remove the text preview, the problem is pretty much solved. I guess I just like the option of being able to set it up how I want. I'm a control freak. ;-)
