That shuts it down. Is there a way to reboot like you can with a ipod by pressing the red center button on the stop button at the same time?

Now is that any different than just turning it off? Does it do anything different for the phone?

It just allows you to reboot in case something happens with the phone where you can't use the slider and allows you to get into recovery mode if necessary. Sort of like a soft reset when the phone it acting up.

Yes it is different. If you simply shut off your phone when you turn it back on you will see all of your apps are still running in the background. Where as if you reset it via the home button and power button it is completely resetting and nothing will be running in the background. It's always a good idea to do the full reset when you encounter a issue.

It is also useful when the iPhone is completely non responsive.

Press and hold the power and home buttons until the Apple logo shows up

That's as close as you can get to what Blackberry users call a battery pull... although on BB Tours, if coordinated enough, you could hit alt-shift-del at the same time, and the phone would reboot :)

Oh, so both are soft reboots so to say?

Sure, one just does more than the other. Whenever I have something act up I always just do the full reset. Which is holding down the buttons until the Apple logo appears. Reason being simply shutting the device off may not work or if it is not responsive you won't be able to just shut it off.
