Hi, I was wondering if I can use my iPhone 4's Facetime with a macbook's iChat? I will be traveling with my iPhone and I want to video chat with my kids who will be at home with my macbook. Thanks for any help!

Facetime is available as a beta download for Mac. I've been using it for a good while now and it works very well.

Apple - FaceTime - Make video calls to iPhone 4 from your Mac.

Can you explain how to do that? I am very new to all of this. My Macbook is version 10.5.8. Not sure if this matters? Thanks so much!

As vietalogy suggested - easier to just use Skype.

Why use Skype and sign up/learn to use a new service when you already have an Apple ID which works with Facetime?

Because Facetime doesn't work in 99% of situations - like on Macs with older versions of the OS.

Because FaceTime is only on apple products as with skype it's crossed platform which also works on smart phones and computers.

I tried to get skype to work on my iphone and it said it was for verizon customers only, is this true ?

I downloaded the app to my iphone but it had no video chat feature only voice
Did I download the wrong thing, I searched for video and it told me verizon only/

Is the picture quality better on facetime ? Ipod touch 4th Gen to Iphone 4 ?

FaceTime picture is clearer but it works. Go to app store and search for skype and download. I'm on AT&T and skype works just fine.

As a matter of fact, Skype for iPhone was the pick of the week for two of us a few weeks ago.

can you skype to a ipod touch ?

Also with face time can you have the ipod on wifi and the iphone on at&ts network, there will be times im on the road and will want to face time my kids at home.

is this possible or do both devices have to be on a wifi connection? if this is the case that is ridiculous

Skype will work on any device in 3G or WiFi. Any iPhone app will run on the iPT. Obviously, the iPt needs WiFi.

I can Skype from my iPhone to my friends on Android devices on any cellular network, or to any Mac or pc anywhere in the world.

The advantage of skype over FaceTime is it works over 3G. But if your phone is jailbroken you can use my3g app which fakes apps that your on wifi so you can use FaceTime over 3G.

I used Skype for the first time a few days ago and found out that while we could see each other, we could not hear either way. To me it looks like the phone was on mute as it had a slash mark through the mike symbol in the top right corner of the screen. Is there a trick to releasing the mute function? I have tried this a couple of times and always the same result. Thanks.

Not to mention the fact that skype works on 3g where facetime requires wifi.

I'd also say skype is at least a good backup if the factime app isnt working on that osx version.
I've used skype on my iphone 4 to chat with my girlfriend using skype on her laptop with windows. It worked great.

Ive tested it between a friends iphone 4 and my iphone 4 and everything worked great for voice, chat and video.

There are even iphone apps that lets you use your iphone as a webcam on a wifi network. Then you can use skype on the computer and the iphone as the webcam hehe
