You can export your contacts from the Backup Assistant web site either to a CSV file, or vcard file and import that to a windows compatible address book, or mac address book that iTunes can use to sync.

Do you think there will be an Backup Assistant app that you can download on the iPhone for an easy transfer? My Backup Assistant isn't working online...

I would think that there would be. They made it available for all the Droid phones when they came out. I bet there will be something in the app store we can download.

Might be easier to help you if we knew what phone you are on now.

Are you using BB desktop manager & syncing to a desktop? That will put your contacts into a phonebook on your computer that iTunes will then sync to your iPhone.

No I am not using Desktop Manager...just backup assistant for my contacts. Main reason I don't use DM is because I can'tseem to find my usb cable for my phone..haven't used it since Sep 10

You can OTA sync to gmail... or, as I noted above, go to your MyVerizon site, and access your BackupAssistant, and export your contacts as CSV or v-card, and then you can import that onto your computer's mail program - then iTunes will sync to that.
