Sucks for who? Not for Mirror Worlds. Apple is very aggressive when it comes to protecting their own intellectual property. Now they see that the sword cuts both ways.

I don't think they will win this, and if they do they certainly won't be getting $600M.

No, the suit was just brought up recently. The verdict they are asking for is ridiculous because they are "triple-dipping". But no it hasn't been settled.

I'd like to see the evidence they have though.

These patents and the whole patent system needs to get deleted. How in the hell can you patent this stuff?

What's really funny is that Apple was granted a patent for Cover Flow like a week after the ruling went against them. Not to mention that this was done in Texas which has become known for handing out ridiculous amounts in civil cases like this.

$600 mil? pffft with 41+ million iPhones sold at an average of $600 they have made about 20 billion

subtract the manufacturing cost (about $200 a phone) thats 20 billion minus 8 billion with 12 billion left over

this is my long winded proof that Apple on just one product alone could dole out 600 mil and not even feel it

    (disclaimer* number are estimates)

Read on BGR they having something around 45-50 BILLION in CASH.. so this really isn't a huge hit for them, if it gets paid out in full.

This is exposing the flaws in the Patent System in this country in how people will exploit it in order to make money by useless, greedy litigation. Many people who file these patents have no intention on designing or creating what they patent. They do it as future insurance that they will one day "cash in" on a large corporation who happens to think of the same thing. What people fail to understand is that it is not unheard of or impossible for people to get the same ideas about something without even being in vicinnity of each other or even hearing about one another's ideas. Google the "Hundredth Monkey Effect".

This Cover Flow patent is as ridiculous as someone trying to patent the way mobile devices play music or some other inane common feature inculcated into everyday technology. We need to begin drawing the line at this ridiculous litigiousness in America or else we'll be heading towards a freeze in innovation and progressing technological achievements. Society thrives under improving what was done, not on suppressing it, claiming it as a selfish, personal acheivement, not to be emulated. If we continue doing this, we will effectively be putting a stop on our intellectual evolution.
