Battery Indicator on New 3GS's

My fiance and I both bought new i phones within a week of each other. First she got hers, and the a week later I ordered mine and it came in three days later. Both are 3GS. I had one previous, but mine crapped out. One of the first things I noticed about hers was the battery indicator in the upper right of the screen also showed the % of battery remaining. This was different than the two year old 3gs I would be replacing soon. However when I received my6 new phone, it does not show the percentage only the bar representation for the battery. Can anyone tell me why mine is different? It not a terribly big deal, but Im just curious. Any input would eb much appreciated. Thanks!

Settings, General, Usage. Turn Battery Percentage on. It is the first item in the list.
