Mail Outbox messages not sent and can't be found

I had written a long email in Mail and when I tried to send it I discovered I was not in wireless range and got the message that the mail could not be sent and would be put in the outbox. Shortly later when I got into range I was unable to find the message in either my sent box nor my outbox.

Any ideas how this could happen?

do you have a drafts or outbox folder for the account?

what type of account is it?

can you check this account away from the iphone to see if the mailbox is exactly the same?

It is a Mac.com Mail account and it has a draft file but no outbox file (this is the standard set up)
