iphone stuck with screen "slide for emergency"

i just bought an iphone from a friend without a sim card and now it is stuck in the "slide for emergency" mode. is there a way to get passed this so that i can use the phone as an ipod or later use a prepaid sim in the phone?


would useing a type of jailbreak get it passed this mode?

please post suggestions thanks.
