I'm investigating the iPhone but haven't taken the plunge.

I have Exchange at Work and use Google Apps for personal (email, contacts, and calendar).

I've read that Exchange sync works OKfor email, contacts, and calendar. I believe the Google email works OK and I've found here a way to add the Google calendar via CalDAV. However I'm not sure about contacts.

Is there a way to sync both Exchange and Google contacts AND keep them separate via some type of grouping?

Since Google Sync uses Exchange, you'll only be able to use one of the other.

I personally use CompanionLink to combine both. I have it set up in different categories to keep things "separate", but in sync together.

OK it looks like it's $10/month to get this feature with the iPhone. Disappointing.

for what? do you mean mobile me?

that's been a known limitation for 1.5 years. you could only have one activesync account setup on the phone. you can only have one mobileme account sync contacts as well
