Hold down the power and home button together untile the device shuts off. Continue holding until you see the apple logo come back on.

What does a soft reset consist of? Whats the difference in a soft and hard reset?

Soft reset is like turning off your computer and turning it back on; you don't "lose" anything. A hard reset will wipe your date. This can be found in the settings menu.

Appreciate the clarification, but I thought a hard reset was holding the home and power button at the same time for 10 seconds. That being a hard reset? Sorry for the confusion.

The one in the settings is the hard reset ?

Yes. Settings--> General--> Reset. You have a few options just pick the one you need.

My virtual keyboard is acting wacky and I just want to try a reboot without resetting any settings. What is the best way to do this?

Hold the sleep button at the top until the popup appears telling you to slide to turn off. Then once it's off, repeat the process to turn it back on.
