any way to "search" the calendar for past appointments?? Might there be an app available to do so?

open the calendar, it's right there in front of you. in the results go up.

I think you are out of luck. There is nothing that I am aware of that does what you are looking for.

Not with the built in calendar. If you use Pocket Informant, however, you can search wayyyyyyyy back. I just did a search on "dinner" and found a dinner appointment back in February of 2007. (Worth the money, IMHO.)
