Camera Orientation Issue

I have often use my phone as a 'scanner' to email copies of documents. But I have found a glitch in the iPhone's auto-orientation when in camera mode which can cause problems.

As we know, hold the phone in portrait orientation when in camera mode, and the camera icon on the shutter button is right way up, indicating the phone knows it is in portrait mode.

Rotate the phone into landscape mode and the camera icon rotates accordingly, so when the photos are viewed they are orientated correctly.

However if, still in landscape mode, you then roll the camera forwards to take a photo of something flat on the table in front of you, it will forget it is in landscape mode, even though the camera icon suggests it still is, such that it will then be impossible to view the photo correctly (as it will constantly rotate itself wrongly as you try to get it right-way-up).

This is perhaps easier to explain via my illustrated explanation of this glitch:

Any ideas why this is happening, or if it's just my phone!?
