Podcasts only sync one way

It seems that when I sync my iPhone, the status of each podcast (new, not new) and the point the podcast picks up playing only syncs one way, from the computer to the iphone. However, I listen to my podcasts on the go, never on the computer so every time I plug it up, the iphone shows lots of podcasts that I've already listened to and never remembers where I stoped playing it. How can I make itunes update podcast status based on what I've listened to on the iPhone?

While I don't have my Mac in front of me to check I want to say it is a setting within iTunes you can change to fix this.

In iTunes - Click on the "properties" of each podcast. Select the option that reads something like "delete after playing". You may even be able to set the default subscription for this option.
