Keep hitting MUTE

Everytime there's a call, I Keep hitting MUTE with my ear. I'm sure there must be an easy way to fix this but recently the menu display stays when I'm using the phone. My ear hits mute on the screen. Is there any way to avoid this so the menu is not available when I'm on a call.

Your screen should turn off and be unavailable for input when you are on a call. The proximity detector should turn it off when it gets to your face. Test it using your hand to cover the top part of the phone while on a call and see if it turns off, if not you might need to get it serviced.
