is my GPS working properly...

i have noticed that my google maps and GPS and location services only work well when i have 3G signal, but i am a bit confused by this because i know that there is a GPS chip in the iphone and i thought it had nothing to do with whether you could get 3G or 2G signal... anybody know anything more about this?

3G definitely speeds up the map downloading. Being in EDGE I find Google Maps to move too slowly if I am in my car driving.
