HELP - recently updated my software and it ate up about 4 gig's of memory... fix?

I recently downloaded the recommended updates for my iphone 3G, 8 gig. It errased all of my ipod info... when I checked out why, I realized that what ever this download was, it took up about 4 gig's of my memory. Now, when I see what's on my phone in itunes, it says that I have 500 MB of music, 500 MB of video, 4.5 MB of photo's, 4.8 MB of app's, and 6.0 gig's of "other." What is this other? Can I access it and delete what's not required?
