How do I make the ~ symbol on the iPhone?

Wondering how to make the ~ symbol on the iPhone.

When the Virtual Keyboard is up, tap the "123" to switch to numeric mode, tap "#+=" to switch to symbol mode, and then you'll see the ~ roughly in the middle (between | and <, and vertically between } and ,)

By special symbols do you mean characters beyond the set you can access on the keybaord?
