Is it absolutely necessary to go through the Apple Developer submission process to test an application I've developed on my ipod touch? Naively I assumed that I would just be able to use xcode to transfer it from the Mac...at least just to test on my own handset.

The free dev SDK only allows testing on the simulator. If you want to test on a real device, you need to pony up $99 for the paid membership.

Given how much other platforms charge (some well, well, *well* into the thousands), $99 isn't a huge barrier of entry :)

how long does it take to process developer acceptance

Thanks. I did do this. Paying $99 is no problem but Apple says they have to process my application to be a developer. (I thought I did before we developed the app, but I apparently I didn't finish the application process.)

In any case, I did finish that process on Friday and now I'm waiting for an answer from Apple. Do you know how long it takes?
