Don't miss out: Join Visible wireless for as low as $25/mo
- Just got this TXT message from AT&T:
"AT&T Free msg: Your Apple iPhone now has free AT&T Wi-Fi access at thousands of hotspots nationwide, including Starbucks*. For info visit www dot att dot com slash wifi"
Could this be true? Heading over to Starbucks next door to try it out :-)10-29-2008 01:37 PMLike 0 - Took a while to get it to work, but it finally did! I have a 3G and is jailbreaked. Basically what I did:
1) Connected to the ATTWiFi Hotspot by going to settings
2) Opened Safari to brows TiPb, and instead it redirected to a page where it asked me for my phone # -- entered my ATT Cell # and clicked submit
3) Text message immediately popped open from AT&T where I had to click on the link provided to authenticate (i guess)
4) Browsed successfully!
I tested using Speedtest (download max: 2103 Kbits/s, upload max: 850 Kbits/s), browsed TiPb, used Qik, Twitterific, etc... all seemed to connect fine on Wifi :-)

Also...if you are jailbroken, do you have PDAnet installed? (See where I'm going with this...)

- Thanks for the links I will definitely try this! Yes, I did get to send/receive email (used it to send the iPhone screenshots I took) Have PDANet too and works as designed :-) Thanks again!
I noticed that you used other applications (Twitterific, etc). Did you try out checking email?

It should, provided you follow these steps:

But I didn't use it with this new iPhone method. I have att DSL service and get access to free wifi with that account. In this method you just put in your DSL user/pass to get in.
I'll have to try it the other way for the phone soon.10-29-2008 08:18 PMLike 0 - I've been wondering about this free wi-fi stuff in the States. From what I have read it seems that the iPhone deals over there are a lot more expensive then here in the UK.
I run a 3G iPhone on an o2 tariff of £35 per month. That gives me 600 minutes of calls, 500 texts, unlimited data and wi-fi access from BT Openzone and The Cloud which covers most of the main public areas that you would expect to have wi-fi.
What would that cost in the States in dollars?10-30-2008 06:32 AMLike 0 - Your Wi-Fi access is definitely a plus if it covers a wider scope. £35 is say approx $56USD. Im with AT&T on a shared family talk plan 2 lines with 700 mins shared, unlimited nights/weekends $69.99, rollover minutes, unlimited internet + 1500 TXT + AT&T wifi (for my line on the 3G) $30 so $99.99 per month. Not too bad... oh and less 15% since Im on a FAN/corp acct.

I was online in less than a min. Pretty good connection speed too!
I took screen shots of the 5 step process if anyone wants to see:
