Traveling with iPhone

I am thinking about buying an unlocked/jailbroken 2G iPhone to use while I am backpacking throughout Australia. I would be using it predominantly for email, uploading pictures and travel updates on facebook, and of course phone calls. I am wondering if an iPhone is the way to go or if there is something else out there that might work better. Please let me know of any foreseen pros and cons of this intended use.

There probably is no better device to do exactly what you are looking to do. However the cost of all that will be great. That is of course if you live in Australia...

I think battery life is the biggest issue, not being able to carry extras. My only knowledge of Australia and the outback is thru the Croc dundee movie.
