Not quite 1.2 Mbps. This was my first time testing the native speedtest app. Previously I'd always used different websites and the highest speed I'd ever scored was 350 Kbps (and usually was closer to 200 Kbps) even with full 3G bars (and WiFi wasn't much better). Wonder if those website tests are using some server far away from me? I see that the native app picks the server closest to my physical location.

Did a little bit more testing. With EDGE I'm rocking a whopping 54 Kbps download! Smokin'! And a 2nd 3G test also returned speeds over 1 Mbps. I guess the 3G data plan is worth it to me after all. I think AT&T may be downgrading EDGE in my area while upgrading 3G as I don't think it was that slow last year nor that 3G was as fast. I'm at home and have 5 bars of 3G but only 3 bars of EDGE.

WiFi of course is much faster (4 Mbps). The speed test native app differentiates between WiFi and cellphone tests but can't seem to differentiate between EDGE and 3G (it's pretty easy to guess which is which though).

Well here at 5:30 am I got 1112kbps, my best so far. Probably due to low service demand in my area at this time of day?

My test site My 3G Speed is located in Chicago which is a pretty good central location for the US and Canada. Seems to be pretty accurate to me and I'm in Miami so.

Why is my speed so different from everyone else's? My iPhone indicated 3G in the status bar, and I selected the 3G test. If it's using WiFi during the tests, it's certainly unknown to me.

In any event, 1 meg, 3 megs... it's all the same to me. As long as a page loads within 5-10 seconds I personally don't care either way. :o

I don't know. 3.62 is pretty high for 3G, but I guess not unheard of. You can make sure you aren't on WIFI by turning it off in the settings. What would be interesting is if you had a friend with a 3G and test it right next to each other at the same time and compare the speeds.

We don't have 3G where I live as of yet. Doesn't look like we will be getting it anytime soon either. I think they have to pipe the EDGE in as it is. We just recently got DSL.

I am finding very depressing speeds on my so called 3G connection. .01-.03kbps for download speeds are not unusual, and when I switch the network over to EDGE I get better results with downloads in the .190-.300kbps range. Why is AT&T advertising 3G when it appears very few people are getting anywhere near that? I guess they can claim anything they want!

Now this is more like it (photo), where the system (app) knows if its 3G or WiFi.

I thought I'd revive this thread because I am noticing much faster downloads with 3.0. My download speeds have gone from 150-300kbps to 1800-2500kbps. Anyone else noticing a difference or is this a local thing?

    On my iPhone 3G it's 2.374mbps DOWN, 236kbps UP.
I think that's pretty damn impressive.
When I get 3GS it should be even faster.

it all depends on whether your on wifi or 3g

for 3g: 760 kbps DOWN, 250 kbps UP
for wifi: 2.6 mbps DOWN, 500 kbps UP.

Oh, and I think you have your number in the wrong order Jellotime91

WOW I did... hahaha thanks! :P

BTW on Wifi my speeds are 4.5mbps DOWN, 285kbps UP.

It's weird but on my connections it seems like the upload speed doesn't get faster no matter what. My download speeds are incredibly fast... upload? No. :P

At my home in Frederick, MD (speedtest.net app, 45 miles north of DC)
    ~1000kbps down
    ~250kbps up

    In Washington, DC
    ~2000kbps down
    ~300kbps up

3G was just expanded to my home in Frederick in December. I found downloads to be quite a bit faster in DC and I assume they are probably similar in Baltimore as well. But even 1000kbps is pretty fast I think for a wireless cell service. It also varies a bit naturally, but looking at my testing results those are the averages. I also tested EDGE one time at home, it was pretty bad; ~150kbps/~80kbps. But I think my area is one of the ones where EDGE was down graded for better 3G.

Yeah I live in the area of Sting7K, so maybe if I check in the DC area it'll be better. I'm just astounded by some of the speeds reported here for 3G though.

3G Download - .33 Mbps sitting at home in the kitchen.

Wifi Download - .23-.33 Mbps depending on what room I'm in. The faster speed was taken in the same room with the wifi router.

That's really slow, especially since you live near a big city.

It's because the network in Canada and especially in the area I live in very very strong.

At least that's what I'm assuming!
Rogers here in Canada has a much more mature and much stronger 3G network than AT&T. Also we have much less people hogging it.
