Ok, this topic had probably been overworked :) I have Windows 2000 OS on my pc and I'm thinking of getting an IPhone.
I would only want the IPhone to activate it (I will sync for music etc down the line)

I have been told I can do this on any PC that meets the requirements (Latest version of ITunes, Windows XP/Vista) and that I am not "Tied" to that PC in order to just activate the IPHONE.

Is this true?

ok, I just want to activate the Phone not sync right now. I plan on using a friend's PC that meets the Requirements and upgrade later to do that.

Well I'd ask to activate at your local Apple store.
But once you sync your iPhone to your friend's computer you MAY (someone with an iPhone could confirm this) lose all of your contacts, photos, etc.

When you sync you can go to the various tabs in itunes and turn off syncing of particular things (i.e.: contacts, calendar, etc.)
