I watch most of my TV via PVR, and while I don't yet have a good system of transferring and archiving the recorded programs to H.264 (I record mostly HD anyway, and haven't had much time to experiment with the Firewire SDK solution), for the shows I miss, I'm now using Visual Hub set to iPhone High Quality to transcode from DivX/Xvid to H.264 and transfer to iTunes for iPhone sync. It's a little time consuming, but it's working like a charm.
(I use high quality since, with the Apple Video cables, iPhone basically becomes the portable media center I've always wanted, where I can finally take shows to my parents' place or friends houses and watch it almost anywhere on a standard def TV (doesn't look as good on an HD TV).
