We don't know that, do we.
Actually since what you are posting are isolated incidents that kinda makes it clear that that is what they are. People would be posting and adding had they had the same issues.

Safari crashing seems quite common actually.
I wouldn't doubt that many people have had safari crash on them, but it isnt a repeating event. I'd take Safari with a monthly crash over the WM IE or Blazer any day of the week, its the best browser on any device of it's size even without flash, when that gets added it wont even be close.

I will add to that, I will take safari shutting down back to the home screen than the device resets and freezes that are common on POS and Win Mobile devices.

Point 1. Once again, read my whole statement. I never said there shouldnt be cut and paste.
Okay mobileman, go for it...

What is your argument in this post exactly:

Who cares about cut and paste if your phone is crashing all the time (treo 700p), or unusable as a cellphone ( htc 8125). I did use it every now and then on my blackberry (a far better and more reliable platform than either palm or win mobile).

We're not talking about 700p's here. We're not talking about 8125's and we're not talking about BB's--that's all stuff you added.

So what are you trying to say?
Point 2. Kind of like the heroic sane job of posting relentlessly in this thread to slam the iPhone.
Way to make it circular! You're not very good at arguing are you?

So when you guys write:
I really dont understand why people that dislike the iPhone spend time posting on iPhone forums, searching the official apple message boards for bad reviews, and posting any negative thing they can find about the device.
maybe they don't have anything better to do and it makes them feel good

and then I respond with my post, you retort with...

Saying the same thing (paraphrasing) that I quoted you saying! Bravo.

Yes, the topic of this thread is pointing out things that suck about the iPhone. You are not adding to that discussion.

Schadenfreude is sweet, isn't it!

This has been the best second page followed by the best first page of any thread I have read on this forum in a long, long time. I like apple for their designers' eye, but loathe their arrogance and unctuousness business practices and specious products.

Its not only on this website that iPhone fans are asking for a break.

thiagofll 07-05-2007 12:46 PM

------------------------------
Let's give Apple a break...

I, by no means am an Apple fanatic or one of those dorks (no offense) that when people complain about the iPhone respond with "what else do you want? A time machine? A dishwasher?"
The iPhone is not perfect like EVERY PHONE OUT THERE. In the past 3 months I've had a Blackberry Pearl, a Blackberry 8300 Curve, a Blackberry 8800, a LG Prada and a Nokia E61i. I can honestly say that the iPhone (in my opinion) is not perfect but it is an awesome phone. Safari mobile is the first browser that actually works as if I was using a computer, it is intuitive, easy to switch browser windows, loads pretty much every page on the web.
The iPod feature works great and sounds just like an iPod.
Google Maps works great as well and the fact that you can get directions to your friends house just by accessing the address book is a big plus.
The touch screen is the best I have ever used. I had an LG Prada (which I had paid $700 for), the screen was not as bright, the touch screen sucked, it did not even have a qwerty keyboard, so the phone was pretty much crap for the price.
The Blackberries are great phones but the browser really did annoy me. The qwerty keyboard on the blackberry is not any better than the iPhones, it is just getting used to.
If Apple had included the 3G functionality on the phone, as they stated, the phone would be larger than what it is, and of course there would be people whinning about it. Apple is about design and that's what I love about their company.

All the bugs in the phone such as not being able to set your own ringtones, Flash, Safari crashes will be fixed with time.

I think this phone works as stated, the touchscreen is awesome. Try the LG Prada and you will see how great you have it with the iPhone.

I have gotten used to the iPhone already, to the point that, I try to touch my laptop's screen instead of using the mouse.

Apple has delivered what they promised and I am happy with it.
Bottom line, it is an electronic, nothing is ever perfect specially when design is the main key.

As soon as people see the iPhone for what it is and not what it isn't, the better. If it doesn't meet your needs for the price, then wait -- and quit *****ing about choosing to wait.

Chupa Chupa 07-05-2007 12:58 PM

I love my iPhone too, but it can be better. I appreciate all the positive criticism on the Web. Hopefully it keeps Apple level headed and intent on fixing the obvious bugs and flaws quickly, and maybe beefing up the available widgets. I don't think this is the time to give Apple a pass. Kudos on a great product, yes, but with an asterisk.

Exactly.

I suspect the some/many of the iPhone basher here work for entities hostile to Apple.

I agree totally! For the past two years I have put up with the Treo 650. Blazer browser was a pain for many reasons. And even with my aging eyes, there are many sites that I can browse without zooming in to read and navigate.

All the bugs in the phone such as not being able to set your own ringtones, Flash, Safari crashes will be fixed with time.

From your lips to Apple's ears.

The ringtone thing was the biggest disappointment for me. Why have such a great MP3 player that can't play those as ringtones?

Crashes have not been a big issue for me. Yes, a few have happened - but most seemed to be traced to my USB hub (which is powered). But using the USB port on my iMac seems to have cured that.

Flash would be nice, but I have found that I love the simpler sites more after cruising the net on the iPhone...

Amen....

appleintelrock 07-06-2007 01:55 AM

I think that if we gave Apple a break... we'd start to see a decline in what they innovate. Unquestioning consumers use Windows... Apple doesn't deserve a break... it isn't as if they give us free products or something.

BWhaler 07-06-2007 04:32 AM

------------------------------
I agree.

I think for a 1.0 product, it is pretty incredible. I hope we get a very solid and sizable bug fix soon. The crashing is a bummer.

Then, Apple can add the missing features as need be.

But giving credit where it is due, the iPhone is fantastic.

Agreed.

I find that almost all my Apple products are very good, sturdy, and on the mark. I love Apple

But I don't mind giving them quite a bit of criticism because they do a solid job of listening and putting it into effect.

Plus, they have been getting a LOT of great press the last year or so in the media so a little consumer complaints isnt going to get anyone fired.

exactly. EVERYTHING you hear in the media now-adays is almost 100% pro apple. as I've said before, constructive criticism is always needed if improvement is what you're looking for.

sshrivastava 07-07-2007 03:16 AM

--------------------------------

I could not disagree more. Apple promised a revolutionary product, and instead delivered a mediocre product with a revolutionary user interface. The $600 iPhone lacks absolutely basic features that other products have had for years and for half the price -- caps lock, multiple SMS recipients, bcc email, tethering, unbundled data plans, and much more. The iPhone has a nice web browser where you can't even set the default magnification, and if browsing the web was THAT important to me I'd do it the right way with my laptop and broadband card.

The iPhone is a big disappointment, but then again I don't drink the same kool-aid as the rest of you. I am a big Apple fan, I have several Macs in my home, and was rooting for Apple throughout this product launch. For those of us who want to actually use the iPhone for internet-based COMMUNICATION and productivity, it falls seriously short. For casual users it's probably the best thing since sliced bread.

I would agree with you on this but I would also say that before I bought the iPhone...I knew it wasn't going to be as much of a work-phone as I wanted it to be.

The battery life imo is terrible BUT I am going to try out what some posters have suggested next weekend and see if battery life gets better (such as turning off wifi, ext...).

I think of it this way....is the iPhone a upgrade for me over my last Cingular phone? Absolutely...

But if someone has a Blackberry and uses it daily and is thinking of switching...I am not sure if I would do it.

Are we iSheep?

Re: Let's give Apple a break...

While Apple gets an A+ for it's ability to conceptualize a revolutionary device, from what I'm reading on the boards (both here and at Apple support) they get anywhere from an A- to a D- on execution. The battery issue being the biggest concern.

If the battery is a hardware issue and Apple won't replace them for free, then tens of thousands, if not more people will be screwed.

There is no warranty on the battery, even with Apple Care, and it costs $86 to replace them. And people will have to do without their phones.

While the crashes can probably be fixed with eventual software updates, these problems seem like a pretty high price to pay, especially for people who depend on their phones for business, or it's the only phone they have.

Bottom line, if these issues (especially the battery) didn't come up in testing, they need to seriously rethink that process. If they did, they had no business releasing the phone until it was ready.

Common consensus? Your exaggerations are more extreme than any hype surrounding the iPhone, you found three people that reported at least a single crash. Not only that but you failed to acknowledge that at least one of the people said it was the best mobile browser out there. No one is saying that apps in the iPhone don't crash, i'm sure it happens, but its still the most stable device i've ever used that had the features this one does.

iphone: safari crashes a lot
i?ve made it crash like 4-5 time already on various websites? not horrible, but not an amazing experience. in particular, it crashed just now on my work gmail account. i?d of course love to use the built-in mail to read my work mail, but:

gmail doesn?t support imap
i read my work mail in 5 different places
so i?m stuck using safari to browse to the gmail interface, which crashes safari. stupid. ooh, just crashed again in gmail. i guess i?ll stop using it for that now. stupid stupid.

between you and i only one of us has ever even used the iPhone, and i've only had safari crash a single time. I opened it back up, it reloaded the page i was on and i was on my way. You have now found maybe 5 reports of Safari crashing and one where they have made it crash a total of 5 times..... If 5 crashes is a lot how do you stand using WM?

On my mac I've discovered that certain sites cause problems with Safari. Usually it's due to bad programming in the animated advertisements. Which I was hoping the absence of Flash and Java would actually make things more stable.

I was able to pry a iphone away from some 8 year old kid and after surfing on their WiFi for about thirty mins I had numerous Safari shutdowns too. I figued i was doing something wrong but after reading this post i guess not. I was wondering if maybe i lost connection to the network or something. Oh well. I hope they get this issued ironed out by the time i buy a Version 2 with EDGE.

My iPhone has been doing this as well. I shut it down and rebooted; however, about 2 days later, the problem came back. Come on Mr. Jobs, we need us a firmware update.

safari and google maps, both shutting down to the desktop!!!!

The first two days safari was working fine, with hours and hours of web surfing, since yesterday I have been observing that the safari and now the google maps application shut down in about 30 secs.

Anyone else experience the same problem, I think I'll have to go to the genius bar at the apple store or return this iphone.

Its a mini computer that doesn't close any apps. Eventually you just need to reboot it (turn it off and on.) It takes about 30 secs and then everything runs smooth.

iPhone Safari Browser Crash
Published July 1st, 2007 in Apple and Technology.
I?m noticing my browser crashing every now and then. At first I thought it was just something I was doing, but now I?m certain it?s the browser. The last crash occured while watching a trailer on the Apple trailer site for iPhone. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Yes! My browser crashed every five to ten minutes today. Which is not cool. I?m not sure what to do?go to the apple store? I won?t return the iphone, but I do want to know if it?s just a handful of phones doing this, because if it is I want a different one!

Chris, I would agree, especially because it went out while watching a trailer. But I just had it crash while clicking on an RSS.

Ha! Chris is obviously typing on his iPhone.

My Safari crashes fairly often, as well; although I don?t mind so much as it?s just a phone. I can?t seem to listen to music and surf the web without the iPod app crashing, as well. Google Maps has crashes several times.

I assume this will all be fixed via an update, soon.

If Safari or other apps are crashing go to

Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

Try this first. If it doesn?t help, it did for me. Then you will want to reset from iTunes WHICH WILL ERASE ALL DATA (music/movies/contacts) but don?t whine, just re-sync.

If that doesn?t work, go to Apple and swap it for another one. (Call the store first to see if they have swappers in stock.)

I was also having safari crashing problems that seemed to be getting worse. It got to the point that I couldn?t even read one web page without a crash. A simple restart seems to have fixed the problem. Haven?t had one crash since. I suspect a bug like a memory leak that gets worse the longer you go without restarting the system. YMMV

Cheers,

Ben

The restart worked gangbusters and I was having regular Safari and Google maps crashes. Thanks!

Me too?Apple are you listening??

Crashes every 3-5th time I use Safari. In Maps, at CNN, at apple.com, etc.

I was experiencing a lot of Google Maps and Safari crashes as well. So far, a power off/on cycle seems to have fixed it.

Interesting reading your experiences. I?ve had a fair number of crashes, resulting, I think, from using Safari like I do my desktop Safari: I leave many windows open. I think iPhone webkit has two obvious problems: a vicious memory leak and serious instanility in the plugin architecture. I suggest this not only explains the crashing when Safari/Google maps (which presumably uses webkit)are left open, but also Apple?s decision to exclude Flash, Java, and only minimal video support. Weird that they shipped anyway - i hope this doesn?t indicate a systemic problem in hardware. Tonight the iPhone gave me a scare and hung up hard. Wouldn?t restart for @ 3 mins.

On the plus side, I typed this whole thing on the keyboard pretty quickly, so I?m getting better.

Web pages that crash applications

We've tested this on a few phones, so I'd be curious to know what happens for other users here.

Start playing a song via the iPod application.

Open safari and go to www.cnn.com

Does your iPod application crash and stop playing music?

This is a bug that definitely needs to be fixed.

Hofo crashes more than any other site I visit. Or maybe I just visit here more than any other site.

dagomike 07-06-2007 14:01

It opens for me. There's tons of crap on there, so it's not surprising it might make Safari bug out. It take a while for it to loan on WiFi, so it's probably hits the CPU pretty hard.

I've had the browser crash on hofo several times and I've also had the problem with the iPod stopping audio playback when I visit certain sites. This happened to me several times last night, but I didn't note what sites I was at when it happened. Hopefully they fix these bugs soon.

Didnt crash on me but i reboot mine every other day or so for good measure.

I can crash the hell out of the web browser and iPod if I try to browse and listen to music at the same time. I just figured that it's too much for the phone. The browser in the iPhone scales the entire web page. It's a very intensive process.

Its a pity the plural of anecdotes isnt data, because there sure is a lot of anecdotal evidence that Safari crashes a lot.

between you and i only one of us has ever even used the iPhone, and i've only had safari crash a single time. I opened it back up, it reloaded the page i was on and i was on my way. You have now found maybe 5 reports of Safari crashing and one where they have made it crash a total of 5 times..... If 5 crashes is a lot how do you stand using WM?

Antelope I have to side with surur on this one - I've seen at least 20 different usernames (clone accts? i doubt) that state their safari crashes in less than 3 threads (macrumors.com i think or everythingiphone.com)...it's a fact - it crashes esp if you are listening to music with it (which seems to be the thing owners on those forums want to do most - surf and listen to the iPod)

Seems the same with GoogleMaps (lower fequency though)...what it seems to be is that mobile OSX is very similar to WM5 - apps don't close and eventually too many open apps causes instability just like any OS out there that multitasks. These two iPhone apps prolly use the most memory on the phone.

Here's a funny thread, not just for the premise, but for the reaction of the iPhone owners.

WM6 on iPhone

The iPhone uses an Intel ARM 624Mhz processor. In theory, the hardware dictates that you can install Windows Mobile 6 on an iPhone. There is still the issue of an application lock and SIM lock to deal with but overall, the concept is still the same when it comes to firmware. The biggest hurdle will be the adaptation of the multi-touch interface since we still need drivers. Anyone interested in this project? :buddies:

624mz ARM cpu? I thought it was 400mhz.

Merlyn_3D 07-02-2007 23:43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boot camp on the iPhone? I doubt we'll ever see that.

whtrbt7 07-03-2007 00:20

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry, the actual processor is an ARM 1176JZF clocked at 620Mhz. The production is alleged to have come from Samsung since the memory is definitely from Samsung. In any case, the processor is definitely an ARM processor which means apps and OSes that require ARM processors should be able to be put onto the phone. The other details about the new processor is that it runs Java well and has a trusted computing environment. The processor is defiitely a plus in this case but the radio hardware just isn't very impressive.

whtrbt7 07-03-2007 00:21

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding boot camp on the iPhone, we probably wouldn't be able to do that. The hardware seems to be capable of WM6 however.

2JZGTETT 07-03-2007 00:23

there is no intel in the iphone, its a samsung CPU

Oh, for the love of God ... why???!?

It's an insult to this hardware, to put WinMo on it!!

I had my days with WM (I bought one of the first imported WM5 devices to hit the shores of the US - the i-Mate K-Jam, from MadMonkeyBoy here on HoFo) but I'm done with having to tweak, tune, and registry edit my phone to get it to work the way I expect ...

Either way, this sounds more like a project for the folks over on xda-users than the folks here ...

So, why would you put MS garbage on an iPhone? Bored? Bet? Dare?

inkhead 07-03-2007 04:57

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We already know it's 620mhz off the assembly line (what they clock it to) but all chips generally get baked and then can do higher speeds. This one is rated up to 700mhz, so some of them could be overclocked to 700mhz.

But a 620mhz phone, just makes you SO excited for them to hurry up and hack it, from the OS stuff that's been posted already you can tell it's real OS X. So eventually we'll be able to run all kinda apps with this kind of speed.

I can't wait for my Voice Changing Application, muhaha

The icrap need wm6 real bad to be a multifunction phone. Without an OS, it is useless for any 3rd party software. The list of Cons is 3 time longer than pros...do a search on this forum. Unable to edit any MS office documents is one of the cons....no gps capability...no tethering ....etc..

Nicely said i mean he is right about the spec of the processor i was actually reading about that yesterday but for gods sake why would you want Windows MOBILE (and i stress that MOBILE) over Mac OSX....... why.......

hmm

It's nor Mobile Safari that is the problem, it's those pesky web site the IE, Opera and Firefox handle just fine.

It everyone would just write their web sites specially for the iPhone, there would be no problems.

The last word on safari crashes (unless people continue to dispute that Safari crashes a lot)

kenheing 07-07-2007 09:15 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have anyone experience these...

Sometime, when I am using Safari, I got kick out to the main menu. I'm pretty sure that I didn't click the home button because it happens to me couple times.

Another problem I experience is that when I'm using Safari while playing song, it shut down the song automatically, but I can still use Safari. My guess is that the Iphone is doing too much at once so it doesn't have enough memory to handle and so it shut down something. Or, my Iphone has problem.

Any thought or anyone experienced the same thing?

By the way, both problems only happen sometime.

wjp09 07-07-2007 09:16 PM

yeah it happens its just a bug.

kenheing 07-07-2007 09:19 PM

I just want to make sure it's not just my iphone. Did both of the problem happens to you? are they well known problem for iphone?

Also, does Apple have any software to solve this problem yet?

wjp09 07-07-2007 09:25 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Im sure apple will fix bugs in their first software update. I haven't met one user who didn't expericence that problem

Thanks, hopefully they have the update soon...

And another Surur sycophant

Great! Maybe we'll see a lot less of this from you guys...

baby_1.jpg

Malatesta, you and your friends seem to be doing all the crying.

The iPHONE isn't the best blah, blah, blah , blah...

Suck it up and except the fact the iPHONE is here and will more then likely drive the other phone developers to copy its GUI.

Come next year you will more then likely be using a iPHONE rip-off phone.

But as I have said you guys seem to be lacking something and these threads seem to make you feel better about yourselves and your gadget so do what you have to.
