I'm at the new Apple Store Bayshore in Milwaukee,WI. The iPhone is awesome. Too bad I won't be getting one until Verizon has it.

Until then I guess I'll be stuck with my Treo 700p. It's going to be a long 5 years.

So they let you use data for free? Now that's cool.

All the iPhones in the store are on the store's AirPort network so they've got fast data for free. They all have active phone accounts as well, I was able to make several phone calls. Interestingly, all of the phones had 408 area codes. The local area code here in Milwaukee is 414.

Shure they demo it on wi fi to fool people into thinking its fast at web surfing, they dont want people to know how slow ATT's EDGE network is. Classic Steve Jobs.

The rep in Chicago told me they were using wifi at the ATT store. So I didn't see how slow EDGE was or wasn't.

I'm sure it does work, just slower. Reports of slow EDGE downloads from reviewers. I want to see just how slow they mean.

Looks like AT&T upped the speed of their network for the launch.

i've read many of the first review posts on macrumors.....some have said it's "slow," others "pokey," some have said "just fine for me" and some have gone as far as saying "just as fast as when on wi-fi".

so there you have it. read for yourselves. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...=321623&page=5

I dn't think you'll really want to see. Better than dialup, but 1/10-1/4 speed of dsl

Voice quality on the iPhone was surprisingly good. This was minutes after an Apple Store grand opening, it was LOUD in there. Loud music playing, dozens and dozens of people talking and shouting and screaming and clapping and laughing. I called my wife and I was able to hear her just fine, I could barely hear myself but she said she could hear me just fine. My brother made some calls using the iPhone earphones and he had more trouble with the noisy environment than I did.

Of course the iPhones were on WiFi, we were at an Apple Store. I wouldn't expect them to demo it any other way, since the expectation is that you'll use WiFi wherever there is a network available. I believe that's one of the reasons that the service plans turned out to be lower than most people expected, AT&T is betting that much of the iPhone's data needs will be handled by WiFi so there won't be much of a burden put on the EDGE network. Next time I go to an Apple Store I'll disable the WiFi and test the speed of the EDGE system.

If EDGE is faster now, wouldn't it be faster on my Treo 650? Anybody?

It's definitely faster on my Blackjack WM5. Still averaging 170k after the iPhone release, so I'm glad for the upgrade. Just wish we'd get HSDPA so I could run at 700-800k like I do in San Antonio and the other major metro areas in Texas.
