The real question is when Cingular will open the gates for pre-orders. I can't imagine these things will be easy to get for a few months after the initial release unless you put money up first...

Cingular say they've had a million inquiries already:

    I find that pretty amazing.

I'm sure that's the number of peeps who have signed up for the email alert. If one in ten buy this phone, there had better be a massive warehouse full of them somewhere...

I would think it obvious that this date should not be taken as fact.

Nobody can say anything until they know, and a Cingular representative is not "in the know". This date will be dictated by when Apple AND the iPhone is ready. Heck, I bet Steve Jobs himself doesn't even know exactly which date yet.

We do know (with reasonable certainty) that it will be released in June. All I care about is when Cingular decides it's time to take orders...

Also, with only two months until a VERY high profile product release, I'd be surprised if the hardware isn't already final and just awaiting very last minute software tweaks. If they aren't that close to being ready, we're all in trouble. I can hear the tech service recording now...

"You're approximate wait time is 213 minutes..."

I think we'd already be hearing substantial talk of a delayed release if there were any significant issues. So whether they start shipping on the 11th, the 15th, the 7th, or the 30th - I just want to know when I can get on the list...

As far as the rep being in the know, I would hope that knowing he was talking to the media, he'd have some tangible info. If not, the patent "we don't have access to that information" would have been the most reasonable response. He did indicate that it was a CS "manager", and not just a regular phone rep. Time will tell. We will probably hear lots of speculative dates for release. Heck, just make one up - you have a one in thirty chance of being right!

Standard protocol is for the carrier to test the phone for 8 weeks before release. Any issues should bereported then. so if that holds true, then Cingular should be getting some fully functional, ready to sell, iphones in April sometime. That is, of course, if Apple is letting them lol.

We will know when it happens, one day a few iPhone videos will show up on youtube and this forum will go bonkers again....

Yes, June seems inevitable. Given that the average FCC approval takes 60-100 days (sometimes as few as 30 days), it would be quite logical to assume they have already recieved it at this point. In fact; components are being accumulated right now and it would be foolish to do this without approval.

I can think of a few posters who are already preparing their negative responses to the first videos that show up...

I just saw on the Apple site that they have not gotten FCC approval yet for the iPhone. Is that normal for a device that is supposed to be released in 2 months?

I just read this on the Apple site that iPhone is on target for the scheduled release in late June

    www.apple.com/hotnews

iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]

Looks like it's late June then.
