I am very green here, so will ask a perhaps stupid question:

Is it yet possible to do an un-tethered jailbreak/unlock on my Ver. 6.0 (10A403) iPhone 3GS with baseband: 05.16.07?

I believe I have seen free tethered programs, but I do not fully understand what tethered means (connected to computer to boot?)

I have been using my locked to AT&T phone but now wish to switch to another GSM carrier (Consumer Cellular).

Thanks for your patience and dealing with such an ignorant me!!

Do you need both, or just an unlock? If just an unlock, try calling AT&T. If your phone is no longer under contract they will unlock it for free.

Many thanks. I have requested unlock from AT&T via their unlock request form on-line.
Why might I want the phone jailbroken? Advantages?

Jailbreaking allows you to install programs that Apple hasn't approved, and lets you theme the look of your device if you're interested in that.
