phone shutting down on full charge,help please

My 3gs is unlocked and running on T-Mobile for about 1.5 yrs now. A couple weeks ago it started to shut down randomly and was unresponsive. Pressing both the power and screen button at the same time is the only way I can get it to work.

Is my phone dying? Will updating the software to the latest help this issue or not? If I update I heard it will slow down the phone is this true?

Please help!

I wouldn't upgrade. The latest software is really made for the a5 processor. Yes your phone is probably dying. Maybe try resetting to factory settings? I'd think about getting a new Phone.
