For new contract or people with eligible upgrades, you can get a free iPhone 3Gs (8GB, black only). It is treated as a instant rebate on the phone when you purchase it.

not to mention an 8GB must be a nightmare jailbreaking

I'm sure they had plenty of takers, but I agree that - at this point - WHY would you buy a 3GS?? I guess there's always people who want the lowest cost vs. what makes sense in the long run.
