I bought an iPhone yesterday. wanted to add my first apps today. connect the iPhone with iTunes via Windows XP (i know: Windows is a complete waste, but nevermind that now). Wanted to add a new app. Get a message in iTunes: update your iPhones software to this and that new version. ok. i launch this crap ... POFFF ... now my iPhone gives me an idiotic picture. shows me a usb cable and the iTunes symbol ... it's stuck. nothing helps, neither switching it on or off nor disconneting it nor switching off the laptop. it just a bad dream, right? can somebody wake me up and tell me: was just a bad dream? please. this is demoralising. this can't be an apple product

If you unplug it, turn it off, and plug it back in and then turn it on - what does itunes do?

it's also worth noting, you have free phone support for something like 3 months from date of purchase

Have you tried using 'restore' in the iTunes panel?
