AT&T upgrade nuttiness

@shutter
Yeah, I understand that part, but doesn't signing a new 2-yr contract reset your upgrade eligibility to 2 years (or whatever time period) after you signed the new contract?

Unless what you're thinking is that the upgrade period is independent of your contract period. In my case, that doesn't make sense either, because I bought the 3G at full price because I was not eligible for upgrade last year. AT&T said I will be eligible on 3/2009 when I bought the 3G. However, AT&T now says I'm not eligible until 3/2010. Hmmm...

I'm not looking for a definitive answer, obviously. I just find it a bit strange. And, personally, I'm fine with waiting until next year when a major hardware revision is due (at least according to Apple's past track record).

I'm really looking forward to OS 3.0, tho. :D

Well you not adding 2 years, your 2 years starts the day you sign the contract. They would be stupid not let you upgrade before your 2 year contract was up. Once your contract is up, you have no obligation to stay, If they can sign you up for 2 more years...before your contract ends...it's better for them.

So I am 6 months into my 2year contract. I'm paying the extra for an early upgrade, my contract for 2 years will begin the 19th. 18 months after the 19th I will be eligible for a full subsidy upgrade.

I pre-ordered my white 16g 3Gs 2 days ago by phone through apple and my confirmation email says it will be delivered on the 19th. I'm upgrading from my 2g iPhone so, I was able to get the early discount.

At&t's standard is to allow subsidized upgrade after 20 months. The amount of your bill, length as a customer and payment history are taken into account to give you an earlier upgrade cycle. I am currently on an 18 month cycle, some are on a 12 month cycle.

im on a 12 month cycle..whooooooooh

I think it's more based on just how much you spend a month. They don't care how long you've been a customer.

If your bill is $100 or more you are most likely going to be on a 12 month cycle.

There has to be something else in there, my family plan is over 200 per month (right at 200 before all the taxes) and I'm still on an 18 month cycle.

Interesting, if you don't mind could you break it out for me? Like, Line 1 = $xxx, Line 2 = $xxx, Line 3 = $xxx

Most of the charges will go to the master line on the plan. The only charges that go to the extra lines is $9.99 + $30 for data.

Example I have 2 lines:
Line 1 = $110 a month
Line 2 = $40 a month

Line 1 is 12 month cycle
Line 2 is 20 month cycle

60 voice
30 data
30 Family texting
18 month cycle

Line 2 = 44.98
9.99 Voice
30 data
4.99 insurance
20 month cycle

Line 3 = 9.99
20 months

Line 4 = 9.99

Line 5 = 9.99

That sucks, everyone else I have talked to that is $100 or more is on the 12 month cycle. How did you look up your cycle? Through your att login or on the Apple order page? I mean both should be the same, just wondering.

It makes sense the other 4 lines are $20 a month b/c they are less than $69 dollars, but the $120 should definitely get you 12 months, you might want to call att and double check that what comes up on your online account is correct.

I just remember when I bought my iPhone (New Years Eve) and I'm eligible 6/1/2010. Course that will roll over next week. I'll wait and see what happens with my next upgrade date. I seem to remember watching my date move in the OLAM a couple of times the last time I upgraded. If when I get my 3G S it doesn't go to 1 year. I will call and see what's up.

I got my 3g july 11th and for Christmas got my girlfriend one and signed up for a family plan for the both of us. What I don't get is that her upgrade is on 12-06-09 the day I bought her 3g and mine is on 12-12-09, 18 months after I bought mine. When I called ATT, the guy I talked to said that hers is wrong and that they would move it to July 2010 where it should be unless I didn't report the mistake. He told me everyone should be on a 18 month cycle.

Nonononononononononononononono!

3Gs hardly has anything new to offer, I'm sticking with my 3G.

Why people continue to say this is way beyond me when it's anything but the truth. The 3G S offers a lot more in terms of upgrades compared to the 3G from the 1st generation. But to each his/her own.

Only thing I can think of is if you didn't have the family plan the whole time. Like if when you first got the 3G you were paying $90 and then later it got bumped up to $120.

It sounds like her line is acting as the "main" line on the account and is getting the 12 month upgrade for being over $100 bucks. Your other line might have been billed long enough in the $69 to $98.99 range to qualify for the 18 months upgrade.

On a side now, I'm gotten myself all confused when counting months. When I count 7.11.2008 to 12.12.2009 I get 17 months, not 18?

Code:
7.11.08 > 8.10.08 - 1
8.11.08 > 9.10.08 - 2
9.11.08 > 10.10.08 - 3
10.11.08 > 11.10.08 - 4
11.11.08 > 12.10.08 - 5
12.11.08 > 1.10.09 - 6
1.11.09 > 2.10.09 - 7
2.11.09 > 3.10.09 - 8
3.11.09 > 4.10.09 - 9
4.11.09 > 5.10.09 - 10
5.11.09 > 6.10.09 - 11
6.11.09 > 7.10.09 - 12
7.11.09 > 8.10.09 - 13
8.11.09 > 9.10.09 - 14
9.11.09 > 10.10.09 - 15
10.11.09 > 11.10.09 - 16
[B]11.11.09 > 12.10.09 - 17[/B] (upgrade month for most 3G owners)
12.11.09 > 1.10.09 - 18
1.11.09 > 2.10.09 - 19
2.11.09 > 3.10.09 - 20

Now that you mention it...I got the family texting at the end of Jan. or the beginning of Feb. Before that I was on a 5 dollar text plan. Which would have put me 5 short of 100.

Black 32gb heading for my doorstep on June 19th. Revolutionary upgrade? No. Lame as this may sound, the increased storage is actually one of the biggest reasons - I want to put my whole iTunes library on the thing, and 16gb isn't enough space. Once I sell my 3G, the net cost won't be much, anyway...
