if i buy the new iphone, and use the restore feature in itunes after sync, will it restore my old text messages? Is there a way to transfer text messages from phone to phone?

When you restore it will restore your text messages. That is the only way to keep them.

Yeah just make sure you are doing the restore from your last back up and you should be good.

Just to be certain, I would do a backup/sync with the 3G to make sure you have the most recent stuff you're transferring to the IP4.
