I'm upgrading my iPhone 3G to a 3Gs: Buddy wants to borrow my 3G...does he need to?

So I told a buddy of mine (also an AT&T subscriber) that I'm upgrading to the 3Gs. He wants to borrow my 3G, primarily to see if, once he swaps sim cards, if he will automatically get charged for the data plan. He wants an iPhone, but doesn't want the data plan. But he's been told that AT&T will automatically charge any iPhone user on their network for the data plan. So he wants to borrow my iPhone to see if he gets charged. If he doesn't, then he wants to pick one up off eBay.

Does anyone know for sure about this automatic data plan charge issue? Seems like this would be a well known issue in this community.

Yes, he will. It may take a few days but it will switch over.

I second that. They will automatically switch to iPhone data plan.
