Shooting a wedding on Sunday with the Sony a7iii that’s still on the way. Was supposed to be here yesterday. Went today to check out the wedding venue and the place is nice. Took some photos and videos to get some ideas flowing in my head.

Cool, I shot over 300 weddings back in the 80’s and early 90’ for a coupe of top studios in my area. I enjoyed shooting them and it was all film back in those days.

My kit was two Hassleblad 500CM’s with eye level prisms, 2-80mm, 8 film backs, 2 150mm sonars, a 60 wide angle and 4 Metz 45 CT-1 strobes. Also had some various filters and gadgets for special effects.

Back in the day we carried two of everything as a safety precaution in case one camera went down. Film of choice back then was Kodak Vericolor VPS 120 and then Fuji came out with their version.

Wow that’s old school and before my time. I used to work for a healthcare delivery service and I went to a photographer’s house one day and noticed the beautiful portraits he had displayed in his home. So me and my limited knowledge of photography asked him what he shot with and when he said Hasselblad I was like what is that.lol But plot twist: none of my equipment came until after the wedding which I got the notification on Friday evening and I was freaking out. I ended up going to a local photo rental place and got half of what I wanted which ended up being a Canon EOS RP, Senheisser shotgun mic, and a monopod. So I was bummed about not having all the equipment I wanted but I did my best to make it work. I may just go ahead and purchase all the gear I rented in the near future so I won’t have that problem again. The DJI Ronin S was the one thing I needed the most though.

I love hearing stories about film and stuff that I never got a chance to use though. I used to work with a guy that had a similar experience as you with filming wedding in the 80s and 90s.

So this is what I was supposed to have for the wedding on Sunday. I don’t know what got into FedEx as the rental company gave them directions to return the shipping. Not only did FedEx still deliver the items they left it at the house when no one was home. So naturally, I had to take the camera out of the box just to try it out. Long story short, I’m in love.lol I think with the a7iii and the 28-75 Tamron lens I would be able to cover 90% of everything I need. So I think I’m going to have to buy this setup after all. I don’t wanna send it back.lol

That’s a nice rig, it’s all about what works best for you. Myself, I was all about being the best I could be. I took many classes on wedding photography and went to may seminars from long time professionals who showed me how to perfect my craft.

I was a rare breed because it was not about the money, the money helped pay for my gear and yes it did help me a lot when I was laid off during the bad recession of 81-82.

I still run across folks who’s wedding I did 40 years ago and it still thrills me to see they are still married and enjoying the magical images I created for them on their special day.

I get folks who always ask me what they can do to make them better, I always tell them to develop their own style, go to seminars and share information with other professionals.

I never wanted to be a copy cat, the studios I worked for back then demanded perfection because that’s what they where paying me for. I strived to be the best I could be and never rejected criticism of my work, because it only made me work harder to perfect my craft.

Good luck and I hope you get the bug and become a good photographer, photography is in my blood and I have loved it since the first time I picked up a camera. Good luck and be patient.

Thanks for the kind words. I felt better this time around even without all my gear than the first wedding I did which I unknowingly recorded the whole thing in 30fps. I just enjoy capturing the joy of people’s lives whether through stills or video and making something memorable. I had a blast and now working on the edit for the cinematic video for them. I have joined Parker Walbeck’s two Fulltime Filmmaker classes for wedding ceremonies and Adobe Premiere editing and both have helped tremendously. I’m confident this will be an improvement over my first wedding film.

On this 2020 Thanksgiving Day, some of it is needed, some of it is required. I'll let you decide which is which.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice camera, I just bought a mint Fuji T3 with the grip locally here and found a used Fuji 100-400 lens on eBay. Going to be my new wildlife photography kit here in Florida.
