I’ve had the iPad 2, and the iPad Mini prior to getting my 9.7” iPad Pro. I average a new iPad every 2 years. Not intentionally, but it just worked out that way...

I went from an iPad 3 to a mini 2, and now have the 2017 9.7" iPad. I'll usually keep my tablets for a few years until something compelling comes along to make me want to get a newer model. When I moved from a BlackBerry PlayBook to an iPad 3 it was because I wanted access to iOS and its ecosystem. The mini 2 was because I missed the smaller tablet size, finally had a retina display in the smaller form factor, and wanted hardware that didn't feel like it was tapped out. The latest 9.7" iPad was due mostly to the price making it worth while to get a bump in specs.

Well I am off to a bad start... The iPad Pro 9.7 was my first iPad (purchased in January) and I just purchased the iPad Pro 10.5.. So I guess 5 months? Ha! I'm hoping to keep this one for 2 years.

It will be a while for me, since I have bought 4 in the last 3 months. Used 64GB Air 2, new 256GB 10.5" Pro, new 256GB 12.9" Pro Gen 2, new 128 GB Mini 4.

I don't need any more, but I am having LOADS of fun!

I buy the new flagship iPad every year. Just like iPhone.

First gen iPad, iPad 2, 3rd gen retina, skipped 4th gen since it came out 6 months later, then iPad Air, then Air 2, then Pro 9.7, and now Pro 10.5. Had 1st and 2nd gen minis as well. I think that covered it all.

Same. Update the mobile devices every year. Laptop every 4.

For all the hardcore iPad users out there - how often do you update to a newer model? Every year? Every other year? Or does it vary?

My wife and I are HUGE iPad fans. We’ve upgraded every generation.

I went iPad 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > Mini > Air 2 > 12.9” Pro > Baby Pro
She went iPad 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > Air > Air 2 > Baby Pro

We have a problem...

Just got my iPad 2017 and hoping it'll last until Summer 2020 then I'd upgrade it to it's successor, or the Pro depending how it goes. I'm living the iPad only lifestyle with my iPhone/iPad being my only computers ATM and so far so good.

It'll for sure serve you well until 2020.

I’ll say a long time. The tablet has always been nice but never a vital tool for my work if we’re not talking about the dozens I have at work. My phone and laptop are vital. We went what I think is 5-6 years with a gap between an the first Retina with Lightening port to the 2017 just “iPad”.

iPad 2 to iPad Air 2... I might upgrade if the next iPad goes edge to edge and Face ID. I feel more urgency to upgrade phones.
