I cannot put gmail onto an ipad 1st generation?

I have just acquired an ipad 32GBP 1st generation I am trying to install gmail to it alas won't work help

I'm going to *assume* you're trying to install the gmail app. If so, your device must be running iOS 7.1 or newer to be able to use that particular app.

Why not go to gmail through the browser, then add the icon/link to the home screen ?
