Any suggestions for a good external memory for the iPad/iPhone/iPod?

Best idea try iCloud or Dropbox or the Box apps that allow you to store things in the "cloud" that's as close to external memory on any iOS device as Apple will probably allow you to get.

to add to swampbaby985's post, there is no SD card slot on the iPad so there is no way to add external storage other than cloud apps like iCloud, Box.net, and Dropbox.
