Sound Effects Icon

New IPad3 user here. Verizon is my carrier. I have set up my ipad as directed and am working my way around the learning curve. But my ipad has this constant "Sound Effects" icon in the center of the screen. Can someone tell me how to make this go away? Thank you in advance.

Is it a picture of a white speaker with a series of white boxes underneath, all surrounded by a gray transparent square? I others words, is this the volume change display? Your volume keys could be broken possibly.
