Magical Smart Cover Help

I just got my first iPad, and got the black Smart Cover.
For those of you who have the smart covers, have you noticed any wear or scratching on the side where the magnet hinge goes?

Do you think good old masking tape over the inside of the hinge will prevent this from happening, assuming wear and scratching will happen.

No marks on mine from using it and my friend has had his with a smart cover since launch, with no marks!

Do you or your friend use any screen protectors along with the smart cover?
I don't yet, but I am paranoid about scratching the screen. I might get a Zagg ... not sure yet. I don't know how tough the iPad2 screen is.
