This is perhaps a stupid question, but what the heck.

When I bought my iPad I didn't get 3G, only WiFi; now I'm regretting that decision. I wonder if there's an easy (or any) upgrade path. Anybody know??

There's no way to make a Wifi iPad 3G.

What you can do is - if you have a smart phone with mobile hotspot capabilities, you can connect to that anywhere.

Otherwise, sell the Wifi & get a 3G unit.

Yes there is a device

It's called a mifi

I small palm sized 3G device that's instantly picked up by your iPad. It has 6 hour charge and can hook up to 6 devices.

And its cheaper than the price difference between the wifi and the 3g models

I like using my phone as a wi-fi connection, makes it easy to take my Ipad with me for my business without having to worry about going somewhere that has free wi-fi

This is what I do. I used to use my Droid X and now my iPhone's mobile Hotspot feature to connect my iPad.
